A College of Magics (copywrite 1994, ISBN 0-812-53005-5): Set in an alternate universe Europe in the early 1900s, Caroline Stevermer populates Europe with magic, mayhem, and a few new countries to boot. Here unfolds a tale of love and responsibility.

Faris Nallaneen is going to be the duchess of Galazon, a small agricultural country, upon reaching her majority. However, her uncle Brinker, ruler in her stead, has sent her to Greenlaw, a finishing school in France. At Greenlaw, women study deportment, logic, language, art and mathematics with a twist. Here the specialty is magic, taught in lectures but never practiced. They are taught to balance their magic as the Wardens balance the four hemispheres.

However, the last Warden of the North tried to create something wholy good and in doing so created a rift between this world and the next, destroying herself in the process. The other Wardens are hard pressed to maintain the balance and cannot leave this existence. Will Faris or one of her fellow students gain the power and take on the responsibility to mend the rift before this world goes crashing into the next?
